Sousakuzine is a special publication by the Japanese magazine “Illustration” (see review of issue 197 here) and features interviews with prominent artists working in the Japanese illustration/animation scene today.
This issue showcases character sculptor Takeya Takayuki, illustrator/manga artist Katsuya Terada, animation studio Kamikaze Douga and illustrator Shohei Otomo ( son of Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo ).
Takeya Takayuki (pictured above) is a prolific character sculptor who has created numerous figure prototypes for characters in titles such as Final Fantasy VIII, Kamen Rider, Devil Man, Garo and more. He also recently sculpted the concept model for the God Warrior (based on Miyazaki Hayao’s manga “Nausicaa” ) in the short movie “Giant God Warriors Appear in Tokyo” screened at “Curator Hideaki Anno’s Tokusatsu Museum” held in 2012. ( see image below )
(top right) A collection of figures sculpted by Takeya-san is featured in his book “The Hunter’s Angle“.
(above & below) Illustrations by renowned concept/manga artist Terada Katsuya, who recently held his 10 year retrospective art exhibition in Kyoto.
(above) A collective interview with Takayuki & Terada-san, who are both graduates of the Asagaya College of Art & Design in Tokyo.
(above) A view of Kamikaze Douga, a highly acclaimed animation studio in Tokyo. I recently talked about their fantastic work in this post on the promotional video SACLA.
And lastly a conversation/interview with Shohei Otomo and his impactful, monochromatic illustrations.
A great round up on some of the best talents in the Japanese animation/illustration scene today. Periodicals like this are seldom reprinted so get your copy before it is sold out.
