Hellboy Library Edition Volume 3

The Hellboy Library Editions collect two volumes of trade paperbacks into an upscaled and sturdy hard cover book. Volume 3 contains Conqueror Worm and Strange Places.

Mike Mignola is a genius, and I’m completely enthralled by his Hellboy (and BPRD) series of comics. Although I owe most of the trade paperbacks I’ve recently started collecting his library editions because 1) the prints are bigger, showing better details; the colors more crisp and vibrant 2) the book includes previously unpublished/unused artwork and sketches not found in the paperbacks and 3) the hard cover binding is really sturdy and protects the book for long lasting enjoyment.

Mignola’s style is really one of a kind. More recent Hellboy artists like Duncan Fegredo are really accomplished as well, but Mike’s technique of combining elegant and simple line work with an unbelievable understanding for form and composition, light and shadow play still make him my favorite artist. I’m pretty sure if Mignola had been a filmmaker he would make a helluva cinematographer.

(below) The book also contains unpublished / unused art work, as well as his collection of character design sketches for the stories.

At this juncture I also have to recommend his excellent Art Of Hellboy art book, which also comes in the same hard cover format and size as these library editions.

At the time of writing the library editions are currently up to Volume 5, and I hope eventually to get them all, including the BPRD books as well. It’s extremely exciting that Mignola will be returning as artist and writer for the Hellboy in Hell, and I look forward to reading that very soon.

he really is one of a kind, and one of the greatest new figures in American comics. his art is spectacular (when he actually draws, that is!) and his writing, though not as reliant on striking dialogue, but instead adopting a “bigger picture” kind of style, is excellent. his work is always full of well researched details, and and his stories are a joy to get lost in. Mignola really is one of the few truly innovative creators in American comics today.

Hi!
I agree with you as to Mike’s mastery of line, shadow and composition. I keep imagining how great his works would even be if not… squashed under the strong colours used. Yes, colour gives his works another dimension, but I’m sure black & white would be greater!

Cheers,
