Hayao Miyazaki’s Daydream Note Art Book Review

Posted By yonghow on September 24th, 2010

“Hayao Miyazaki’s Daydream Note” is a watercolor illustrated collection of short manga stories showcasing the various battle platforms that were used during WWI/II, with emphasis on a myriad of fighter planes, and also some tanks and battle ships. The sombre mood of warfare is never present and the stories are whimsical and light hearted. If more than anything, the sheer brilliance of Miyazaki-san’s watercolor artwork is more than worth the price of the book.

“Daydream Note” is a very personal piece of work for Miyazaki-san, as he indulges in his lifelong passion for aerial dogfights, WWII fighter planes and…pigs. The book is cramped full of luscious watercolor paintings, and if you can read Japanese its a big bonus with plenty of trivia and juicy morsels to be found in the captions and short manga strips.

(above) A very familiar Ghibli character makes a guest appearance. “Porco Rosso” is a big favourite amongst Ghibli fans, including the artist/author of “Venice Chronicles”, Pixar story artist Enrico Casarosa.

What more can I say of this delightful and gorgeously illustrated book ? I have no doubt the viewing of Miyazaki-san’s watercolor paintings have a profound soothing and therapeutic effect, I’m sure many of you folks out there can attest to that.

is there an english version for this one? and love your site!!!!! you’re most probably the only site who gives detailed reviews on Ghibli books, specifically Art Books. really appreciate it. and would you mind posting any available english versions to them at the end of your posts so that we know whether there are english versions to them?

Pixie Lady – Thank you, to the best of my knowledge there isn’t an English version.

That’s a good idea you suggested, I’ll add information on the English versions (if any) to my posts, thank you. :]
