Katagiri Hiroshi is a veteran special effects makeup artist/creature designer/sculptor whose many credits include work he did at Stan Winston studios and for films like Pacific Rim, Cabin In The Woods, War Of The Worlds, Hellboy and more. I first featured his work in the 2nd issue of Sousakuzine.
This book (Anatomy Sculpting) is both a portfolio of his sculpt pieces for feature films/personal works, as well as an instructional/masterclass on the numerous techniques he employs for his sculpting work.
The 2nd half of the book delves into sculpting techniques and there is great emphasis on the reference/study of accurate human muscle structure and form. Dedicated sculpting notes on both male and female body forms are included.
A great showcase of Katagiri Hiroshi’s body of work and sculpting techniques. The book is in Japanese, but perhaps a tip or two can still be figured out from the surplus of images found in the instructional section.
