Valerian - The Art Of The Film Book Review

Valerian – The Art Of The Film delves into the stunning concept art work created for Luc Besson’s epic sci-fi movie, based on the original French comic series Valérian and Laureline.

There’s a good amount of material in here; plenty of character design sketches for the huge myriad of alien species featured in the film, as well as spaceship designs, weapons, as well as some storyboards for select scenes. I personally find the impressive concept art for the different alien worlds and habitats the highlight of the book.

I really wanted to like Valerian; for me the film had plenty of stunning visual style, but very little substance in the narrative, and I found it impossible to connect emotionally with the leads or their motivations. For folks who are interested in the fantastic visual design of the film however, this book has plenty to offer.

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the film. I wanted to love it as well because it looks refreshing and I love The Fifth Element. But the script was a major problem for me and maybe there was some questionable casting. The editing too felt a bit haphazard. Still there was something about the movie I support, I would like to see more blockbuster films break the mold on how a blockbuster film should look like. I think the french have a great flair that lends itself to awesome blockbuster spectacle.
I don’t think it’s a good movie and yet I recommend watching it purely for the visuals.

Yes I do agree with you too especially the French touch Luc Besson is bringing to the sci-fi genre. Most sci-fi films are from the US these days so we need some variety, and Luc Besson has something fresh to offer.

I have been a fan of the Valerian comics since I was in school. It is my favorite comic and sci fi saga.

Sadly, although Besson visually captured the wonderful look and feel of the books, he as director and writer failed to create a compelling story and the actors failed to generate any level of emotional impact or even a connection with the audience. Halfway through the film, I was hoping for it to end.

federico – Yes, I feel exactly the same way ! It’s a missed opportunity to create an amazing sci-fi film.
