TAIYOU - Matsumoto Taiyo Illustration Collection Book Review

TAIYOU is a new art book by renowned Japanese comic artist Taiyo Matsumoto, the creator of manga like PingPong and Tekkon Kinkreet. This is his first published art book in almost 2 decades ( the last being “101” in 1999 ). The book includes art work for novel covers, t-shirts, posters, cards and more. Many of the art work collected will be familiar to fans of the artist, but it’s great to finally be able to enjoy all of them in one single volume.

(above) Art work from PingPong. I highly recommend the Masaaki Yuasa ( Devilman Crybaby ) directed anime series if you haven’t already seen it.

(below) Art work from Tekkon Kinkreet. The anime adaption is a must watch, especially for the mind-blowing background art by Kimura Shinji.

(above) One of my all time fav illustrations by the artist, even more than that one of the boy reading the Akira manga. (below) The soft cover book comes housed in a thin cardboard slipcase.

I’m a big fan of Taiyo Matsumoto’s work, so this book really made my day. Many of the pieces included in this book have never been printed at this size ( about A4 ), and they look fantastic. Recommended.

Long time lol… I’ve been recently pondering about reverting back to more child-friendly style, which I’ve been trying from time to time w/o too much success.

I think ego for artists is like a big deal, really. If you got just enough of it you’re dedicated enough to create your world, but if it gets in the way it keeps getting in the way, so…. But those are really beautiful, undeniably. It seems as if everyone’s in there to play, even the sword-wielders.

Matsumoto Taiyo never ceases to amaze, we got to get this one!

Are you aware of any changes in the Amazon.jp policies re: shipping artbooks internationally? I’m in the U.S. and have ordered from them semi-regularly over the years, so I’m familiar with the difference between items that are sold from Amazon vs. older titles that are only available from third-party sellers who usually don’t ship internationally. I went to place an order today, and all of the artbooks I selected were semi-recent releases that ship direct from Amazon… and all of them came up that they couldn’t ship to the U.S. I’ve spot checked a bunch of other books, including some of these that you’ve reviewed recently, and all of them give the same “can’t ship to you” message. I’m feeling pretty bummed at the loss of this resource for my artbook habit. 🙁

Jen S – Amazon Japan’s shipping page was updated on the 4th of April with changes to some domestic shipping fees, but I don’t see any changes made to overseas shipping. That said, what you mentioned is correct, items that were previously could be shipped to overseas countries ( not just for the US, but many other countries ) are showing up as unshippable now. This is a worrying development. I am still investigating the situation and will update with news asap. Thanks for he heads up.

Update 04/10 – I’ve just contact Amazon Japan and customer service told me that they’ve restricted global shipping temporarily, for reasons they did not specify. I hope they lift this restriction very soon. I’ll be checking periodically for updates.
