Okja - The Art And Making Of The Film Book Review

I’ve been a big fan of South Korean director Bong Joonho ever since his spectacular crime thriller Memories of Murder, released some 15 years ago. Since then the director has been involved in films that feature quite a bit of VFX, including The Host and Snowpiercer, but his craft has never been extensively documented in an “art of” book, until now.

Okja – The Art And Making Of The Film takes us behind the scenes of his latest movie, an intimate tale of friendship between a young girl called Mija and her “superpig” companion Okja. Included are plenty of concept art sketches of Okja, set design concept art, storyboards, production stills and more.

Many of the VFX shots of Okja were created by Method Studios (Vancouver), and I have a couple of friends working there that were involved in the creation of the visual effects.

Okja was shot by renowned DP (director of photography) Darius Khondji, who also lens David Fincher’s Se7en. In this older article I talk about his work, in particular his brilliant use of the rule of thirds.

Okja might not be my favourite Boon Joonho film to date ( it’s probably Memories of Murder or The Host ), but it’s still a highly accomplished and interesting film to watch. This book offers an illuminating look behind the making of the film and will certainly give you a better appreciation of the movie making process. Recommended.
