Visiting The Tribute To Otomo Exhibition, Tokyo.

Held from the 3rd – 18th of June 2017 at Tower Records ( Shibuya, Tokyo), the Tribute To Otomo exhibition showcased the original art work seen in the art book Otomo – A Global Tribute To The Mind Behind Akira, some 80 pieces in all.

Also on display were a few pieces of rough sketches that Otomo used in preparation for the cover he drew for the art book, as well as the original drawing of Tetsuo used for the Japanese special edition Akira dvd boxset.

The exhibition was also thoughtful enough to accompany each artist’s tribute piece with browsing copies of their comics, which I found invaluable because I was able to note down more than a few titles that piqued my interest.

No photography was allowed inside the actual exhibition, besides the front and back of the main banner/sketchboard.

Doodles from some famous manga artists – ( above ) Otomo himself ( guy in hat, which somewhat resembles the one he sketched for the 2012 Genga exhibition ), and Korean artist Kim JungGi ( image below ).

In comparison to Otomo’s Genga Exhibition in 2012 this one is very small in scale, but quality of art work on display is amazing. If you haven’t seen the Tribute art book, I highly recommend it.

Truly a timeless masterpiece!

I believe that one drawing of Otomo walking from behind was made by Sushio from Trigger, the girl walking beside the Otomo figure very much resembles Mako from the anime Kill la Kill 🙂

Jacksnapp – Oh yes you’re right ! Sorry, I’m not very familiar with Kill La Kill. The drawing of Mako is signed by Sushio, and the ojisan drawing signed by Otomo.

The nicest surprise for me was seeing a handful of Otomo originals along with the tribute pieces.

The portrait of Kaneda that was in Kaba 2 was on display, and I may be mistaken, but I don’t think it was included at the Genga exhibit, so that was exciting to see.

My favorite tribute piece was of course Hisashi Eguchi’s. I’m forever in debt to this blog for introducing me to that genius!

Josh – Which Kaneda portrait was it ? I only remember seeing the Tetsuo piece.

I’m glad you like Hisashi Eguchi’s work, I love his work as well ! He hangs out with Otomo quite a bit. :]
