Blood Of Nira’s Creature is a commemorative art book/retrospective of the late character designer/illustrator Yasushi Nirasawa, who sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of 52. Famed for his creature and character designs utilizing skeletal and skull motifs, Nirasawa was a prolific artist that contributed to many Tokusatsu titles like Kamenrider, Garo, Devilman, Godzilla, Ultraman and more.
This 223 paged art book covers an extensive collection of his art works, with over 1100 creature & character designs, and featuring more than 1500 skull motifs ! The chapters are organized by design work for other collaborators/clients, like Go Nagai, the Kamenrider series, designs for film, comics, games, toys and also personal works. There’s a lot of stuff in here.
(above right) Nirasawa also worked on the Phantom designs for Final Fantasy – The Spirits Within. Back then I was not aware of his work, but looking at it now the asymmetrical body designs is definitely his style of work.
A huge bonanza of monster/creature/character design goodness by the famed artist, whose early passing is certainly a huge loss for the Tokusatsu scene. I only wished that some of the art reproductions could have been bigger ( there’s too many packed in a single page ), but since there’s so much material to cover I’m sure this was a tough editorial choice. That said, this art book still comes highly recommended.
