Patlabor - Reboot

This is just for folks who might have missed out on the news – A new Patlabor animated short is coming !

It’s called Patlabor – Reboot, but the title is somewhat misleading, because one would assume that the entire animated series is getting a remake, but this is just a one off animated short. Still, any Patlabor is better than nothing.

The project is a collaboration between Khara Studios ( Evangelion ) and animatorexpo.com, the latter which has produced numerous outstanding anime shorts since its inception.

Check out the teaser below :

Folks living in Japan will be able to catch it at the cinema ( In Tokyo, it’ll be at Shinjuku’s Wald9 cinema ) from Oct 15th, and it will also be released as a blu-ray later in that month.

looks slick. had to double check if some of the shots are using 3d models for the human characters.

Phenomenal! The story will never end, I love it. Masamune Shirow is absolutely brilliant.

How lucky ! *envious* A new series will be much welcomed, yes. :] Sadly the quality of Mamoru Oshii’s live-action films ( tv-series in this case ) always seem to pale in comparison to his anime works.

yonghow,

Couldn’t agree with you more. Mamoru Oshii only seems to be as good as the people he’s working with at the time, and Headgear was phenomenal. Same could be said for Ghost in the Shell. Oshii just seems to lack taste when he’s on his own.
The whole omnibus movie was like a trade-industry pitch-show. Quite a few of them seemed to be made as possible pilots for funding. The Patlabor short by Khara Studios was pure potential and it blended the 3D and 2D elements so well I didn’t notice the differences. Plus, they worked in those details we all wanted in the past – how you transport equipment fast, avoiding traffic and roads completely, & the effects of fighting in large, dense urban environments. It was pure magic. I was baked as I saw the 12:45AM show, and left on a flight the next day – but it was totally worth loosing sleep!
