This one was another delightful find at Nakano Broadway’s Mandarake rare art books store – a brand new copy of Methods – From Layouts Of Innocence. It covers in detail the layout boards used during the production of Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost In The Shell sequel Innocence.
The format and presentation of the layouts are similar to the Methods – Patlabor 2 art book, with accompanying annotations for each layout. Folks conversant in Japanese are rewarded with a wealth of film-making tidbits in these notes, with discussions on composition, framing and camera movements.
This volume is pretty hard to come by these days; I’ve chanced upon the Patlabor 2 Methods book quite a few times in BookOff ( a big 2nd bookstore chain in Japan ) but never this one. If you’re a fan of Innocence, this comes highly recommended.
