Brutus Magazine - Otomo Katsuhiro Special

This book is a revised edition of the Otomo Katsuhiro Special issue released back in April 2012 ( for coverage on Otomo’s Genga Exhibition in Tokyo ) by Brutus, a Japanese pop culture magazine. The contents have since been expanded/updated to cover more of Otomo Katsuhiro’s work in the past year.

(above) The book kicks off with an article on Otomo’s involvement in the animated film Short Peace, based on Otomo’s manga short of the same name. For more information on Short Peace, read this, this and this. One of the segments in Short Peace by Freedom director Morita Shuhei has been nominated for the 2014 Academy Award’s Best Animated Short.

(above & below) Mini-catalogues (Spring/Summer 2013) for the Japanese fashion label Comme des Garcons, utilizing Otomo’s artwork to great effect. These aren’t for sale but I’m sure they’re been traded for good sums of money on Japan’s Yahoo Auction site.

Any idea what instrument Otomo used to ink the buildings in that Akira spread? The regularity and fineness of the lines look like a technical pen was involved. He had the patience of Job either way.
